I'd like to thank you for the website on Henry's teaching. I studied with him in 1974 & 5. I produced a shoddy video on him which I sell on ebay, very reasonably. If you would mention it, I would appreciate it. I'm so happy to see the many images of Henry's work, especially the landscapes he did in LA. My best to you. If you need to get in touch, I'm Phillip St. John P O Box 94 Bonnyman KY 41719-0094 606 436-0608 I'm getting ready to move so all those may change. Keep up the good work, PSJ

Enjoyed your fine site !! I spent an enjoyable time in 1960 at the school, learning to do things I didn't think possible. Time well spent. I still enjoy the two works by Henry that I brought home. Peter Trounce, Toronto.

I am doing research on Inez Hogan and would like to know if you have any information on the portrait of her. Any information would be appreciated, including when was the painting done? Thank you and have a great day. Dillsburg, Pa. 17019-9514

Christopher H. Wolf- 2/28/02
I have a lot of information about Inez Hogan, and would be happy to share it with you. My interest is about the painting. Miss Hogan was a prolific author and illustrator of children's books. She wrote and illustrated 63 books, illustrated another 19 books and had her work published in a number of other publications. (I think that I have all of her published works.) She spent much of her life living in Provincetown in the summers and New York City in the winters, and attended the Cape Cod School of Art. She was born in 1895, so she and Henry Henshe were contemporaries. Thank you for your assistance. Chris

I am an art student trying to teach myself about color and am having trouble finding teachers in my area that instruct in your method.

Joan Loral Jackson-Painter-9/21/02
It is very good to see Sammy in this web site. He is my teacher. Past instruction was in 1984-1985, and 1988. I will try to attend the October workshop.

Thank you. I am writing from Australia, where it is difficult to receive even sketchy information about Hensche - or Hawthorne or the other Cape Codders, for that matters. Your on-line thumb-nails will help bring more people, overseas as well as in America, to an appreciation, not only of Hensch'e work but also of his philosophy. You are providing a great service to him and to what he stood for.

I loved reading all you had on this site. It has inspired me to study Hensche and the principles he taught. I had a hard time picking my "position in painting" as I am a painter, also an Instructor, but always a "Student!" Thank you for a wonderful web site. I have it bookmarked!

Sue Harrison-Art Historian-02/10/03
We hear alot about Henry up here and it was interesting to find your site and fill in some blanks. He continues to have many followers and devotees on the Cape not to mention collectors. Thanks, Sue Harrison, Arts Editor Provincetown Banner

Great site; I appreciate the anecdotes and the images.

I would like to know how I might find a copy of "The Art of Seeing and Painting". The last one I saw in a bookstore was back in 1993 in Annapolis. I regret not buying it then. I am teaching now and would love to get a copy of it. Thanks for the website....Let me know if you have any information on Henry's book...

Came across this site by accident while trying to find a first edition copy of Hawthorne On Painting, which is supposed to have some paintings in it to illustrate the text. I have been reading the small paperback version over and over for years, and each time get more from it. I was thrilled to see that John Robichaux is selling a similar text on Hensche's teachings, and ordered it immediately. I'm struggling to gain the knowledge and growth that will allow me to express myself more fully. I'm so glad that I stumbled across this site, and was able to see Hensche's paintings - especially the still-lifes, and the demo. Thanks.

Jodye Johnson - Just Visiting - 07/29/03
I am especially interested in the work of Sam Britt of cleveland, Miss. , a student of Hensche. I think his work is brilliant and am so intrigued by all the plein air artists.

Joyce Levine - Painter - 08/06/03
I was so happy to find your site. My mentor was Paul C. Burns who Studied with Henry. In the early 80s I went to Cape Cod. Paul said that I really ought to visit with Henry. Well, that was an experience! He was so full of life and had so much energy. He showed me many of his paintings and also shared some of his wife's work. Ada was his wife, right? I bought one of his "mud heads". The next day I went to his class. There, everyone was painting bricks with very sharp pallet knives. I cut myself on one of them. I wanted to join the class but I was on vacation with my husband and we were not staying on the Cape. If you would like to see the Mudhead that I bought, I will be happy to e mail a picture of it to you. He wrote all over the back of the painting too. He was amazing!!! Joyce Levine

Hi,I am trying to reach a painter whose name is Sam and lives in Cleveland who use to teach in your foundation. I live in Istanbul but I met him in Cleveland about a month ago during my visit to missisiphi through one of his students. An email address or postal address whould be great if you can. Can you also tell me how can I learn your way of painting and study it? Thank you and kind regards Lara

Pam Hudson- Student - 08/11/03
I notice from some of the messages posted on your guest book page that people sometimes have a hard time finding Hensche on Painting. (I myself checked the usual online sources such as Barnes & Noble, etc. without luck.) May I suggest that they can contact the Provincetown Art Association and Museum at their website www.paam.org or email paam@capecod.net or phone 508-487-1750 to obtain a copy.

Ginny Huxford -Just Visiting - 09/08/03
Hello, I'm the daughter of Richard and Edith Goetz who were friends and colleagues of Henry and Ada. Henry was a very memorable guest at our home in Okla. City many times during the 60's and taught at my father's art school. He also did demonstrations in our backyard for my father's art class. I'm considering selling one of the demonstrations that I have, one of a gentleman. It's a "finished" painting measuring 20 x 24. If you'd like to see a jpeg I can mail on to you. Best regards, Ginny Huxford

Phyllis Steimel - Painter - 10/14/03
I am enjoying the website. How I wish I had had the opportunity to have been a student of Henry ! Such brilliant use of color !

I was a student of Sammy Britt's at DSU and graduated in '99. I felt that I only touched the tip of the ice-burg when it came to understanding how to see color and light. It's been 4 years and I am now able to pick up the knife and brushes again. I am truly grateful to Sammy Britt for the inspiration he was to me in that short of time. I hate that I never had the chance to meet Mr. Henche though.

I'm a plein air painter and student of Hensche student, Susan Sarback at the School of Light and Color in Fair Oaks, California. I'm grateful to all who have worked to keep alive this method of seeing and painting color, and especially to those who are able to teach it to others.

Cheryl Downey - Student 10/19/06
Discovered this website a year ago after meeting Chuck Ceraso, a painter and teacher who was and is a student of Hensche, and experiencing some of the magic of full-color seeing. Hensche's art and almost shamanistic point of view towards nature and light are inspiring.

Carlysle Meek - Painter 01/31/07
With the greatly reduced cost of book publishing today and the availability of excellent copiers which can accurately reproduce colors, I'm wondering why no one, including the foundation, hasn't republished The Art of Seeing and Painting. Of course a new edition might devalue original volumes, but would be such ablessing to art students who are unable to study the book. Please consider taking this step. Thanks.

Bryan K. Zidek - Student 02/07/07

Regina-Champagne Babin - Instructor 05/03/07
I think you have a great tribute here to the legacy of one of America's best artists. It is wonderful to be able to view this site with my students. Some of them are overwhelmed with the intensity of color. Of course, we know, that this is what makes the Hensche masterpiece!

Steve Craighead - Painter 09/11/07
Hi, I studied with Henry back in the 80s. Henry and Ada allowed me to copy a bunch of his slides one Fall. I used to give a slide show of his work up at the school and in one of the restaurants in P- town. I noticed you're not displaying some of the work I have on those slides. If I can get around to scanning them would you be interested in having me send them and then showing them? I also have a pretty decent drawing I did of Henry one evening when he posed for me. I could send a photo of that too. Steve

Bruce Jones - Painter 09/18/07
What a superb artist. Color .Wow. I struggle do do the same.

Meredith Wanner - Just Visiting - 09/27/07
My mother, Maryann Wanner, studied with Henry at the Cape (10 years maybe?). Every palette knife stroke was in consideration of Hawthorne-Henche's philosophy in regards to light and color. She past away in 1999...she would have really enjoyed this website.

Clayton Buchanan - Painter/Student - 12/16/07
I studied with Henry in the late 60's early 70's. He changed my view of painting totally and to this day I think of him, the beauty he saw, and of course the magic of color. Those years are with me forever. To those who were there those wonderful years with me - best regards and keep on painting.
