As a student of Henry Hensche, I have practiced and taught the visual language of light and color for forty years. In my attempt to analyze, explain, and practice this language, I have come to realize the true validity of this direction of study. Through an honest effort of painting the effects of the light keys on color outdoors and using north light indoors, I have enriched my awareness of the simple beauty to be found all around me. The mere awareness of the limitless color and lighting in nature is gratifying enough, if one only learns to enjoy and appreciate the beauty of the world. Each day and season offers a new and rewarding visual experience. The study of the natural relationships of color and light keys is the subject. When this is understood through repeated practice, anything can be conceived as being beautiful regardless of the subject matter. Never stop studying. Put yourself in front of nature and see what you can learn. If we ignore those fundamental things that God is trying to teach us through nature, we never reach our artistic potential. Only God knows our true potential, but He gives us enough hints and nudging so we know where to strive for it. In our greatest artistic moment, we can merely create a weak illusion of God's great creative genius, but that tiny glimpse of God's beauty is more than enough to share with another soul. S. Britt |
