A Rare Breed

The Students of Hensche series is a life size illustration of the many painters that Henry Hensche has instructed, and worked with . Moreover, it is about the result of teaching color relationships and principles that have been put into practice through hard work and study. A legacy of color study which not only can be traced back to Claude Monet, William Merritt Chase and Charles Webster Hawthorne but one in which many Hensche students have gone on to become successful painters in their own right while holding true to the basics taught by Hensche. This page is dedicated not only to those art students who have stayed true to the Hawthorne-Hensche Approach in painting but mainly to the student painter who is still seeking to learn about color relationships and their effect on painting.

It is only a partial list of the countless students who studied under Hensche and cared enough to write about a legacy worthy of attention by academic societies and institutions the world over. Understanding the intense discipline of "seeing" comes only from good instruction and many days of painting in different light keys. Mr. Hensche always said that, "color sense is not just a gift. That it can be taught." If this small list of painters inspires others to study the fundamental methods taught by Henry Hensche, it will have served some of its purpose.
